A move to investigate the feasibility of reinstating passenger rail services to Mount Gambier is welcomed.

A state parliamentary committee will look into the issue and has invited public submissions.

It's unfortunate the track infrastructure wasn't converted to a standard line in the early 1990s along with other parts of the state.

However, the possibility of the Penola pulp mill going ahead has raised new hope for passenger trains to return.

Trains are an energy efficient and environmentally friendly means of transportation. They are generally comfortable, safe and suitable for people with disabilities.

The Victorian experience has also shown that trains can also be economically attractive. The Victorian Government's investment in its regional rail network has paid commercial dividends.

And an increasing number of people are using trains in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

With rising fuel prices and an increased awareness of the environment, many South East people will prefer to travel by train if the option is fast, clean and reasonably priced.

The possibility of trains returning to Mount Gambier raises questions about the potential impact on traffic and development in the city centre.

The notion put forward of a new transport terminal on the edge of the city is worthy of investigation.

A major hurdle to be overcome before the rail idea can truly gain momentum is to determine the future of the Penola Pulp Mill.

With so much of the region's economic future depending on whether the mill goes ahead, it's important the developers keep the community informed about their progress towards financing the project.
