The Border Watch supports a call by the State Opposition for the Government to disclose full details about a so-called rehabilitation program for sex offenders at the Mount Gambier Prison.
The government conceded yesterday that such a program will begin soon after revelations by The Border Watch led to questions being asked in State Parliament.
The Correctional Services Department says no additional sex offenders or paedophiles will be transferred to Mount Gambier Prison specifically for rehabilitation, but a full rehabilitation program involving up to 12 inmates will begin next week.
The department should give a commitment that no prisoners will be transferred to Mount Gambier to bulk up the program.
And details about how the program will work and what it involves should be released to calm community concerns.
The department's statement that no sex offenders are released directly into the local Mount Gambier community as a "matter of policy" is reassuring, but information about how this policy is guaranteed should also be given to the public.
Bus terminal needed
THE city council will next week consider calls for a permanent bus terminal in Mount Gambier. The Lady Nelson Visitor Centre site appears to be working well as a "temporary" site.
With the addition of a ticket agency there for Stateliner and V/Line it makes sense for the visitor centre to become a permanent home for the terminal.
There is easy access and good parking.
